Strengthening international humanitarian law protecting persons deprived of their liberty

We agree that deprivation of liberty is an ordinary and expected occurrence in armed conflict, and that under IHL States have, in all forms of armed conflict, the power to detain and the obligation to provide protection and respect applicable legal safeguards. The UK is actively supporting the state-led, ICRC-facilitated process to strengthen IHL protecting persons deprived of their liberty and is exploring additional ways to enhance knowledge and exchange best practice with partners.
