The Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement have been upheld by the well-established cooperation relationship between Portugal and the Portuguese Red Cross. Portugal recognises and appreciates the national society’s active role in several important areas of public life (medical emergency, disaster response, health service, rescue and recovery services, volunteering and health education).

Portugal and the Portuguese Red Cross National Society have established a permanent consultation mechanism that has met to review matters such as the follow-up of the resolutions and pledges of the 31st and 32nd International Conferences of the Red Cross and Red Crescent and the promotion and dissemination of International Humanitarian Law.

Portugal is currently working with the Portuguese Red Cross, following the International Committee’s guiding principles, to establish a national committee on International Humanitarian Law before the end of 2017. Portugal is certain the national committee will be an important forum for designing public policies on humanitarian awareness and humanitarian education.
