Austria pledges to continue to engage to raise international awareness about the challenge for the protection of civilians in armed conflict posed by the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. Austria further pledges to continue to look for effective measures to strengthen the respect for international humanitarian law in this regard. Austria remains gravely concerned about the humanitarian consequences related to the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.


Action plan

Evaluation criteria in 2019: At least 20 opportunities for raising awareness about the obligation to protect civilians in armed conflict, and in particular from the use of explosive weapons in populated areas, were used. Austria promoted compliance with international humanitarian law in this regard on several occasions.
