The Government and National Society of New Zealand jointly pledge to work together:
- to ensure the effective development and implementation of domestic laws and policies on disaster risk management, including through implementing lessons learned from the 2011 Christchurch earthquake
- to support Pacific countries to further reduce and manage the risk of human and economic loss from natural and climate-related disasters
- to respond quickly and effectively to humanitarian needs created by natural disasters in the Pacific (and elsewhere), in line with requests from affected countries
- in international fora to promote effective disaster law.
Action plan
Proposed evaluation criteria:
- effective cooperation in the development and implementation of domestic laws and policies on disaster risk management
- number of Pacific countries supported to reduce and manage risk of natural and climate-related disasters
- effective, coordinated engagement in regional disaster risk management discussions
- strong coordination between the Government of New Zealand and the New Zealand Red Cross in humanitarian responses to natural disasters in the Pacific (and elsewhere)
- a coordinated approach to promoting effective disaster law in international fora.
