Understanding migration: an emergency or commonplace phenomenon?

December 9, 2015, 12:15 PM - 1:15 PM

Hosts: Italian Red Cross and Australian Red Cross

Languages: English, French

Where: room 2

Description:

At the moment Red Cross and Red Crescent workers and volunteers are on the ground in Europe, the Middle East and across the world providing migrants with life saving aid, reuniting families, advocating for humanitarian services, and promoting social cohesion.  But is this a crisis requiring an emergency response, or an ongoing commitment to a commonplace phenomenon?

National Societies will join representatives from IOM and IFRC to address the issues faced in origin, transit and destination countries, and discuss how the RCRC Movement can work together to respond to the practical and humanitarian challenges migration presents, from aid through to advocacy, using our networks, our expertise, our communities and volunteers.

The event will focus on current work and future opportunities, highlighting the importance of an integrated and coordinated approach within the Movement and with States, to better assist people impacted by migration, be it short term response to people on the move, or embedding ongoing work in supporting vulnerable migrants.

In particular, this side event will focus on how National Societies respond to migration related issues, whether it is in an emergency setting, or as an ongoing issue – and population – of concern. The side event will focus on challenges and activities carried out by different actors in relation to the implementation of “Resolution 3 on Migration: Ensuring Access, Dignity, Respect for Diversity and Social Inclusion” adopted at the 31st International Conference.

In accordance with the commitments agreed to at the Migration Partnership Meeting held in Tunis last September 2015, the event will emphasize the importance of an integrated and coordinated approach within the Movement, engaging and positioning Red Cross Red Crescent in scaling up a collective response in countries of origin, transit and destination, and responding to the needs and strengths of people impacted by migration, through direct services, advocacy efforts with Governments, and partnerships with other actors.
